Styling art in your home

Art is such an important part of our lives.  It is everywhere.  From our walls to our bedding.  From our dishes to our clothes.  Even the packaging on our food and toiletries.  We are overstressed as a society, and I feel a good piece of art can help us to refocus and relax.  I love a piece of art that invites us to stare at it and learn more about it.  To ponder its creation and meaning.  Sometimes art can just be something meant to bring us that peace and hope for a better day.  Joy can be found when we take time to reflect on things around us and stop focusing on our devices.

Displaying our fine art in our homes can seem like a daunting task at times.  You want it to look good.  You want to bring attention to it and to be able to enjoy it without your home looking like an art gallery.  I totally get that.  We live in our homes and want to be able to function in them and yet have them feel warm and inviting as well.  I have put together tips to help you with some of the most common areas we find art in the home.

Mante/fireplace

Let’s start with the mantle or fireplace.  This is often the heart of the home.  It’s in our living room or family most of the time.  It is surrounded by our families most of the day or evening.  We want to be able to relax and enjoy our space while interacting with those around us.  Above the fireplace or mantle is also a one of those areas we tend to have more space to decorate and yet keep things out of the reach of small hands and little grimy fingers.  You know who I am talking about, lol.  When styling any area of your home, there are a few things that can add that special wow factor that will take your art to the next level.  I talk about these in this article.  The first is layers.  While we don’t want to obstruct our view of a beloved piece of art, just a hint of layering can add depth and make it seem more alive.  Here are a few examples of layering your art on a mantle.

Using different heights to the objects on your mantle can also achieve a more layered and interesting look as well.  Consider the colors within the art as well.  We don’t want to distract with bold colors next to a simple landscape.  That can take our eyes away from the painting we have spent so much time and curating for our home.  Use similar colors but vary them to add interest.  Don’t try matching colors.  I discuss this in more detail in article name here as well.

Shelves

These concepts can be applied to any area we want to place our art.  Shelves can be a fun way to display smaller pieces of art.  Using different objects to create an eclectic look can bring interest to your shelves.  Here are some beautiful examples.

Gallery wall

One area that some of us are blessed with is a large wall to create a gallery of many paintings.  A gallery wall can be either minimalistic, with all the same frame and size, or to give it a more welcoming, warm look, try varying the size and type of frame.  Again, the more you can vary things, within reason, the more interest you can invoke.  Even if you want to use all gold frames, if you vary the shine, shade and style, you can achieve a wonderful look that keeps our interests for a long while.

Art in the bathroom

One room that often gets overlooked is the bathroom but being able to create a space the in relaxing and inviting can be such a relief compared to the outside world and those bathrooms.  A piece of art placed with love can help this space to feel homier and more relaxing.

Art in the bedroom

This room is also often overlooked when we are decorating our homes.  But filling all our rooms with the right art can create a space that we want to spend time in and will help our family to feel more at peace.  The bedroom should be no different.  We can find that much needed relaxation with art here as well.  And who wouldn’t want to find more ways to relax which can lead to better sleep.
