As an artist, I understand how overwhelming it can be to navigate the art world and purchase artwork that speaks to you. Here are a few tips to help guide you:

Allow yourself to be moved:

When searching for artwork, allow yourself to be moved by what you see. Look for pieces that evoke an emotional response, and that resonate with you on a personal level.

Starry Night Over the Rhone (September 1888) by Vincent Willem van Gogh (30 March 1853 - 29 July 1890)

I am moved by paintings by Van Gogh and other classic artists. But buying an original is out of my price range. But there are many other current, contemporary artists that you can find that can give you those same emotions.

Invest in quality:

Investing in quality artwork is not only a wise decision for your collection, but it also supports the artist and the art community as a whole. Look for pieces that are well-crafted and made with high-quality materials.

Fine art paintings will use professional grade paints and quality materials.

Consider the artist's story:

Artwork is more than just an object; it represents the artist's story and journey. Consider the artist's background, influences, and motivations behind the work.

Knowing the artist you are buying from can give you a much deeper connection with your art. Get to know the artist by following them and joining their newsletter.

Support emerging artists:

Supporting emerging artists is a great way to discover new talent and contribute to the growth of the art community. Look for up-and-coming artists whose work speaks to you.

As an emerging artist I appreciate my customers as they help me build my career and body of work. I use their feedback to grow and continue creating.

Don't be afraid to ask questions:

When considering a purchase, don't be afraid to ask questions about the artwork, the artist, and the buying process. As an artist, I love engaging with collectors and sharing the story behind my work.

The stories behind our work can again add such depth to the art and give the art more relevance.

Consider the artwork and artist’s potential:

Art can be an investment, so it's important to consider the future potential of the artwork. Look for growth in the artist and collections from the artist to add more pieces to your own collection

When a new artist shows potential, getting in on the ground floor can be a great way to support them and if they continue to grow you and join them on this journey. A collection or group of paintings that are all with a similar theme can give you the opportunity to buy several for you home and have some cohesiveness within your collection.

Remember, buying art is a personal and emotional experience. Allow yourself to be moved, take your time, and trust your instincts when making a purchase.
